Vitéz Tibor Osváth-Edmond died on June 9, 2017, at his home in Charlottesville. He was born on July 12, 1920, in Budapest, Hungary, the son of Vitéz Osváth Zoltán of Imola and Szerbák Irén. He was a graduate of the “Ludovika”, the Royal Hungarian Military Academy, and commissioned on June 18, 1942.

Following World War II, he lived in Germany, where he worked for the U.S. Army, and later for the United Nations until 1950. In that year, the need for trained military to aid in the Korean Police Action opened the doors of the United States for Hungarians, allowing for his immigration.

In the United States, he attended and graduated from Oklahoma Central University, magna cum laude, then Central State College, with a degree in physics. He worked for Continental Oil Company, in the Research Department, from 1954 to 1985.

He married J. Rose Choquette in 1956. They had two children, Rick and Lenke.

After his retirement, he moved to Lexington, where he served as a volunteer at the George C. Marshall Research Library, at the Stonewall Jackson House, at the Rockbridge Historical Society, and at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store. He was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, where he repeatedly served on the vestry, and he was a member of the Lexington Kiwanis Club, where he served as treasurer for 15 years.

He is survived by his widow, by their children Rick and Lenke, their spouses Stephanie Ross Edmond and Rolf Nikolaus Mann, and by their grandchildren, Eric Edmond (wife Jean), Marika Mann (husband Duncan Tarbutton), Erika Megibow (husband Nick) and Jennifer Adams (husband Charles), his great-grandson Jason Edmond.

He will be remembered in a service at St. David’s Anglican Church in Charlottesville on July 8, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont.
