Thomas William Hasselmann of Lexington died Sept. 10, 2017.

Thomas William Hasselmann of Lexington died on Sept. 10, 2017, surrounded by his wife and all his children.

Tom was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Thomas and Ann (Murphy) Hasselmann. As a child, Tom lived above the family-owned Irish bar and hotel/restaurant, the Hayes Roadhouse, which was a neighborhood favorite and iconic building in the Midwood section of Brooklyn for over 70 years.

After high school, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and was immediately called to active duty. After his military service, he moved his family to Westfield, N.J., and later to Montville, N.J. Tom graduated from St. Peter’s University with degrees in mathematics and philosophy, and was a gifted systems analyst before that occupation ever really existed.

Friends introduced Tom to the lovely Louise, and they married in 2007. Tom cherished his time with Louise, from traveling around the world to sitting quietly at home. In 2013, Tom and Louise moved to the Kendal retirement village in Lexington, where they continued to enjoy life together.

In addition to his wife Louise, Tom is survived by his three brothers and their wives. Tom leaves his beloved children: Tom and Rhonda (Glen Rock, N.J.), Stephen and Maggie (Rye, N.Y.), Susan and Larry (Pennsylvania), John and Brigid (Sparta, N.J.), and Michael (Fayson Lakes, N.J.). Also, his step-children and their families: Mary Beth and Mac Baker (Lexington) with Ellie and James, and John and Patricia Payne (Newton, N.J.) with Kendra, Patrick, and Courtney. In addition, Tom is survived by his first wife and mother to his children, Kathleen. Tom’s fourteen grandchildren are his enduring legacy.

A Celebration of Life and reception for Tom will be held at Sunnyside at Kendal on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) or Shriner’s Hospitals for Children (www.shrinershospitals.org/donate) in Tom’s memory.
