Stewart, Lewis Choice Of Rockbridge Area Voters

Primary results in the Rockbridge area reflected what transpired state-wide in the U.S. Senate race and across the Sixth District in the congressional contest.

Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, won the Republican nomination to face Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, edging Del. Nick Freitas, 44.86 percent to 43.12 percent. E.W. Jackson came in a distant third with 12.02 percent.

In the Rockbridge area, Stewart garnered 50.2 percent of the vote to Freitas's 35.6 percent and Jackson's 14.2 percent.

Jennifer Lewis, a mental health worker from Waynesboro, coasted to victory in the Democratic primary to become the party's nominee in the race to succeed Republican Congressman Bob Goodlatte. Lewis, who will face Del. Ben Cline in the general election, collected 47.3 percent of the vote to Peter Volosin's 27.39 percent, Charlotte Moore's 18.61 percent and Sergio Coppola's 6.7 percent.

Lewis was the choice of 49.3 percent of Rockbridge area voters to Volosin's 30.7 percent, Moore's 15.0 percent and Coppola's 4.9 percent.

Here are the unofficial results in each of the three Rockbridge area jurisdictions:

Rockbridge County – (Republican U.S. Senate primary) Stewart, 471; Freitas, 334; Jackson, 139. (Democratic Sixth District Congress primary) Lewis, 433; Volosin, 232; Moore, 124; Coppola, 42.

Buena Vista – (Republican U.S. Senate primary) Stewart, 72; Freitas, 54; Jackson, 19. (Democratic Sixth District Congress primary) Lewis, 29; Moore, 19; Volosin, 15; Coppola, 6.

Lexington – (Republican U.S. Senate primary) Stewart 74; Freitas, 49; Jackson, 16. (Democratic Sixth District Congress primary) Lewis, 177; Volosin, 151; Moore, 51; Coppola, 16.
