State Police Looking For Information In Fatal Hit-And-Run

Thursday - The Virginia State Police continue to ask for the public’s help in finding the driver of the tractor-trailer that struck and killed a man along Interstate 81 just south of Raphine Aug. 4.

Virginia State Police Trooper J.T. Crewe is investigating the hit-and-run fatal crash which occurred a short time prior to 1:45 a.m. Crewe had stopped to assist a vehicle which he believed was broken down on the right shoulder on Interstate 81, just south of Va. 606 when he found Donald Davis, 65, of Newport, Tenn., deceased, on the ground behind his 1993 Subaru.

The investigation found that Mr. Davis was struck by a tractor-trailer, believed to be a Freightliner.  The tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the roadway, struck the victim and continued north without stopping.  Mr. Davis’ vehicle was approximately 300 feet south of the bridge and Va. 606, on Interstate 81 at the 205 mile marker.

The Freightliner will have damage to the front right side of the tractor, to include the headlight and bumper.  Evidence left at the scene indicates that the truck may be silver, or a combination of silver and white.

The Virginia State Police are asking that anyone traveling in that area from 12:30 to 1:45 a.m. and noticed the 1993 Subaru on the right shoulder of the roadway to please call.

A diagram showing the crash is shown here in order for all to understand the vehicle positions and how the pedestrian was struck.
