Rowsey Completes Standout Season For Marquette In First Round Of NCAAs
Saturday, March 18 – Lexington’s Andrew Rowsey and the Marquette University men’s basketball team saw their season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA tournament, with a 93-73 loss to South Carolina on Friday in Greenville, S.C. Marquette (19-13), the 10th seed in the East Region, was leading by 10 points in the first half, but the seventh-seeded Gamecocks (23-10) used an 11-0 run midway through the second half to take control and pulled away, led by 29 points from Sindarius Thornwell.
Rowsey, a redshirt junior guard who graduated from Rockbridge County High School in 2013, scored 13 points for the Golden Eagles in a nationally televised game. Going to his pump fake, he drew multiple fouls, making 5-of-6 free throws, including one after draining a 3-pointer while fouled. He sank two 3-pointers, grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists.
Rowsey finished the season with an average of 11.6 points per game, shooting 44.7 percent from 3-point range. Going into the game, he was shooting 93.3 percent from the free throw line, ranking third in the country. Rowsey played two years at UNC-Asheville before transferring to Marquette.
South Carolina will play Duke and the second round on Sunday.
