Monday, Sept. 18 – The Rockbridge County High School golf team captured the Valley District regular-season championship by winning a tight match against Broadway on Monday at the Lexington Golf and Country Club.

The Wildcats, who joined the Valley District this year, tallied a 145 to defeat Broadway’s 149 in the nine-hole match. The win was RC’s ninth consecutive victory, and both teams entered the contest undefeated in nine-hole district matches.

RC’s Trey Cathcart and Cole Higgins tied for first place, both shooting 33 on the par-35 front nine. The score tied Cathcart’s best nine-hole round. It was a personal best for Higgins, who sank putts consistently and had four birdies.

Broadway’s Seth Smallwood placed third of 12 golfers, firing a 34, and teammate Shaina Beach finished fourth with a 35.

Despite a rough last hole, RC’s Grace Huffman tied Broadway’s Lane Bazzle for fifth with a 38. Senior Noah Gyscek stepped up in his final home match to fire a 41, completing RC’s team scoring. In addition to Gyscek, it was the last home match for senior co-captains Huffman and Trey Cathcart.

Also competing for RC were Cole Cathcart (42) and Garrett Huffman (43).

The Wildcats will travel next Monday to Broadway’s home course, Shenvalee Golf Resort, in New Market, for the final 18-hole district match.

Both RC and Broadway have qualified for the Region 3C tournament on Oct. 2 at The Club at Ironwood in Staunton.
