Wednesday, Oct. 11 – The Rockbridge County High School golf team concluded a storybook season by placing second at the Group 3A state tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon.

The Wildcats tallied a two-day total of 658, finishing just 13 strokes behind state champion Abingdon (645), playing on its home course. Completing the standings in the four-team tournament were New Kent (678) and William Monroe (711).

Leading Abingdon was Connor Creasy, firing a 138, with a 70 on Tuesday and a 68 on Wednesday on the 18-hole, par-72 course. Abingdon’s second scorer, Bryce Addison, shot a 153.

The Wildcats, Valley District regular-season and Region 3C tournament champions, trailed Abingdon by 12 strokes after the first day, with the Falcons leading 317-329. The second day was much closer, with Abingdon tallying a 328 while the Wildcats shot a 329.

Senior co-captain Grace Huffman led RC, shooting an 80 on Tuesday and a 79 on Wednesday for a score of 159. Garrett Huffman completed an outstanding freshman season, firing 83 on both days to finish with a 166. RC’s third scorer was senior Noah Gyscek, posting an 83 and an 86 for a 169. Junior Cole Higgins fired an 83 and an 87 for a 170.  Senior co-captain Trey Cathcart struggled with a 92 on Tuesday before shooting an 81 on Wednesday for a 173. Cathcart’s younger brother Cole, a sophomore, fired 92 on both days for a 184.

It was the Wildcats’ first trip to the state tournament since six years ago, when they placed eighth.

Grace Huffman still has golf left to play, as she'll compete in the girls state tournament at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, just outside of Richmond, on Monday, Oct. 23 and Tuesday, Oct. 24. Huffman doesn't have to play in a qualifier because she won the coed regional tournament.
