Monday, Oct. 8 – The Rockbridge County High School golf team placed fifth of eight teams at the Class 3 state tournament to conclude an outstanding season on Monday at Williamsburg National Golf Club.

Playing on a tight, difficult course, where scores were higher than usual, the Wildcats tallied a 340. Abingdon won with a 310, and Hidden Valley placed second with a 320. New Kent (327) and William Monroe (333) followed in third and fourth, respectively.

It was the Wildcats’ second consecutive trip to the state tournament, after they placed second last year to Abingdon. After graduating three of their top six players from last year’s team, the Wildcats battled to make it back to the big stage, winning the Valley District and Region 3C titles.

Abingdon’s Connor Creasy was the medalist at the state tournament firing a 70 to win by one stroke on the 18-hole, par-72 course.

Leading the Wildcats was sophomore Garrett Huffman, shooting a 79 to tie for 10th place, earning all-state honors by finishing in the top 12. Cole Higgins, the Wildcats’ lone senior, carded an 82 for 16th place and RC’s second score. Will McClung, taking on his first state tournament, posted an 87, and fellow junior Cole Cathcart completed team scoring with a 92. Also competing for the Wildcats, playing in their first state tournament, were Aaron Plogger (97) and John Shomo (109).
