Monday, Nov. 27 – The Rockbridge County High School girls basketball opened the season with a 30-25 loss to a scrappy Staunton River team on Monday in Lexington.

In a game between former district rivals, the Wildcats jumped to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter, fueled by a 3-pointer each by Jordan Dameron and Emily Galford and a bank shot by Haley Cruze, but the Golden Eagles stormed back to tie the game at 8-8. Six of those points were on free throws. SR’s man-to-man defense and rebounding gave the Wildcats problems all night, and RC committed 34 turnovers. RC played solid zone defense and pressed at times, and SR committed 24 turnovers.

Sam Faw, who led all players with 13 points, scored the Golden Eagles’ final seven points of the first half, helping the visitors take a 11-10 lead into the break.

Galford scored five of her team-high 12 points in the first half, and she sank a 3-pointer to tie it at 15-15 midway through the third quarter. She and her teammates struggled from the free throw line, though, with Galford shooting 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from the line and the Wildcats shooting 4-of-17 (23.5 percent). SR didn’t shoot much better from the foul line, going 10-of-22 (45.5 percent), but it made the difference in the final score.

The Golden Eagles went on a 7-0 run to take a 22-15 lead into the fourth quarter, but Dameron, Galford and Cruze made shots to fuel an 8-0 run that put RC up 23-22 midway through the final stanza. SR’s Kaitlyn Burns then scored two layups off turnovers, and the Golden Eagles didn’t trail again, putting the game away at the free throw line.

Aside from Galford, RC’s scorers were Dameron with seven points, Cruze with four, and Lyla Chittum with two. Other than Faw, SR’s leading scorers were Burns with six points and Adkins with four.

The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday at home against E.C. Glass, starting with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m.
