RC Baseball Comeback Falls Short Against Terriers In Regular-Season Finale

Thursday, May 18 – In its final game of the regular season, the Rockbridge County High School baseball team trimmed an 11-run deficit to six but couldn’t catch up to Blue Ridge District rival William Byrd, falling 15-9 on Thursday in Lexington.

With the win, the Terriers (7-13 overall, 4-8 district) avenged a 9-5 loss to the Wildcats (12-8, 7-5) on May 3 in Vinton.

Before Thursday’s game, the Wildcats (12-8 overall, 7-5 district) honored their nine seniors: Daniel Allen, Cody Bartley, Ty Bennett, Nick Gilbert, Brandon Minter, Joshua Lawhorne, Noah Ramsey, Trevor Ramsey and John Thomas.

In the first inning, WB took a 2-0 run on a single by Mitchell Lyle. The Terriers extended their lead to 6-0 in the second, scoring runs on singles by Grant Watson, Malon Hale and Bryce Boothe, and then on a sacrifice fly.

The Terriers added three runs in the third to increase their lead to 9-0, scoring on singles by Watson, Boothe and Gehrig Spradlin.

RC cut the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the third. Alex Balisteri hit a grounder that led to a throwing error intended for third base, bringing home Reeves Whitmore, and Balisteri then ran home on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, WB scored two runs on a double to left field by Jay Trail to go up 11-2. RC responded with in the bottom of the fourth when Lawhorne doubled to drive in Noah Ramsey, cutting the lead to 11-3.

WB scored three more runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 14-3. Watson ran home on a wild pitch, Hale scored on an error, and Boothe singled to left field to drive home Spradlin. In the bottom of the sixth, Bennett singled to left field to bring home Lawhorne and Daniel Sorrells, and Bennett ran home on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 14-6.

The Terriers scored their final run in the top of the seventh when Watson grounded to left field, driving in Ethan Spaker.

The Wildcats weren’t done battling, though, as they scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Bennett doubled to right field to bring in Minter, Lawhorne ran home on a wild pitch, and Whitmore singled with a grounder to drive in Bennett. The game ended with a catch in right field.
