Saturday, Feb. 16 – Parry McCluer High School senior wrestlers Hayden Lawrence and Austin Moore both earned medals and all-state honors by placing in the top six at the Class 1 state tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.

Lawrence, competing at 120-pounds, earned all-state honors for the third consecutive year by placing fourth. He advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to George Wythe’s Sam Lamrouex in a 7-1 decision. Lawrence bounced back by defeating Rural Retreat’s Jacob Huff 6-1 in the consolation semifinals before losing to Mathews’s Aaron Miles in a 9-1 major decision in the third place bout. He finished the season with a record 33-9 and concluded his high school career with over 100 wins.

Moore, earning all-state honors for the first time, faced Grundy’s Matthew Riley in the fifth-place bout. The PM wrestler, who was pinned by Riley a week earlier in the West Super Regional tournament, was down by five points in Saturday’s bout before making a strong move to pin Riley in 4:25. Moore finished the season with a record of 29-15.

The Blues, tallying 17 points, tied Honaker for 15th place of 25 scoring teams.

The other four Blues competing were all in their first state tournament. Going 2-2 for the Blues appearance were juniors Tyler Royer (106) and Nick Craft (138). Sophomore Logan Bane (182) and junior Trent Fitzgerald (17) went 0-2. Freshman Zack Fisher (126) qualified for the state tournament but did not compete.
