Tuesday, Jan. 8 – In a tight Valley District game, the Rockbridge County High School girls basketball team came up short 58-54 against Turner Ashby on Tuesday night in Lexington.

The Wildcats (3-8 overall, 0-4 district) jumped to a 10-1 lead in the first quarter, fueled by six points from Jorden Dunn, but they were plagued by foul trouble and turnovers much of the game.

The scrappy Knights (6-8, 2-3) rallied to take the lead in the second quarter before the Wildcats got a 3-pointer each from Zoe Camden and Emily Galford go up 29-24 at halftime.

In the third quarter, TA outscored RC 22-10, ending the quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 46-39 lead into the final period. Many of the Wildcats’ turnovers were caused by TA stealing inbounds passes.

RC cut the lead to three in the fourth quarter, but the Knights made free throws and a basket to extend it to seven before Galford made her final three free throws after a 3-point attempt, but the clock expired before the Wildcats could get any closer.

The teams combined for 51 fouls, with the Wildcats committing 27 and the Knights racking up 24. RC shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the free throw line, and TA shot 68.3 percent (28-of-41).

Galford led the Wildcats with 19 points, sinking two 3-pointers and making 9-of-11 free throws. Dunn added 15 points, Graceon Armstrong scored 11 points, and Camden chipped in seven. Both Dunn and Camden fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Gracie Moyers and Becca Shiflet led TA with 13 points each, hitting two 3-pointers apiece, while Natalie Spruhan added 10 points and Eva Jordan chipped in seven.

The Wildcats will continue district action at Harrisonburg on Thursday, starting with the junior varsity game at 6 p.m., before playing host to Alleghany on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the sixth annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout.
