Faith Build 2017 Starts Aug. 24

Pastors from Lexington and Rockbridge County churches will gather to do their own bit of carpentry Thursday, Aug. 24, at 1:15 p.m. at Greenhouse Village. The event is the kickoff for Faith Build 2017 when crews from local faith communities join to build a Rockbridge Area Habitat for Humanity home.

The Faith Build is a house sponsorship through which local churches provide both financial support and volunteer labor to build a safe, decent, affordable home with a local, low-income family.

The homeowners to-be, Mac and Olivia Smiley, are an energetic, hard-working young couple hoping to build a home for a family, according to a Habitat spokeswoman. They’ve tried fixing the problems in their trailer they currently live in, but the severity of the maintenance issues may cost more than the home is worth.

“The money needed to take care of repairs such as rotting floor parts, (water-damaged) ceilings, and the need for new windows to hold heat are surpassing the worth of the home,” said Olivia Smiley. “With the opportunity to have a Habitat home, we would be able to have a safe, structurally sound, and warm environment to begin to raise a family.”

The enthusiasm of members of Life Chapel, where the Smileys attend, sparked the choice of the Smiley’s home as the 2017 Faith Build. Eight other churches eagerly joined, and their pastors will participate in the Faith Build 2017 commencement event. Those churches are Lexington Presbyterian Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, Manly Memorial Baptist Church, Rockbridge Church, Bethesda Presbyterian Church and McElwee Chapel, Collierstown Presbyterian Church, Buena Vista Seventh-Day Adventist and Grace Presbyterian Church.

Rockbridge Area Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry that provides affordable housing solutions for local, low-income individuals and families. Its mission is to eliminate substandard housing in Rockbridge County by partnering with the community.

Other area faith communities are welcome to participate in Faith Build 2017. Donations are also welcome in honor of a faith community, friend or loved one. Contact Lynn Harris at 463-3770 or lynn.harris@rockbridgehabitat.org for more information.
