Dawson Leads PM Past Nelson County

Friday, Sept. 22 -- Marcellius Dawson rolled up 396 yards of total offense to lead the Parry McCluer High School football team to its first win of the season, a 43-20 triumph over Nelson County on Homecoming night in Buena Vista.

Dawson rushed 29 times for 309 yards and four touchdowns and also threw for 87 yards, including a 70-yard TD pass to Bech Garrett. The Fighting Blues (1-3) led 21-13 at halftime and then pulled away from the Governors (2-3) after the break.

Brice Wilson completed 16-of-33 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns for Nelson. Devante Ellis-Rose hauled in eight receptions for 210 yards and one of the scores.

PM never trailed in the game, going ahead 6-0 on Dawson's 2-yard run midway through the first quarter. After Ellis-Rose's 82-yard TD reception knotted things up, the Blues quickly went back ahead on Dawson's long touchdown pass to Garrett. PM stretched the margin to 21-6 on Dawson's 72-yard TD run early in the second quarter.

But the Governors scored on the final play of the half, with Felix Rodriguez's 1-yard touchdown plunge -- which followed an acrobatic 39-yard reception by Ellis-Rose -- pulling Nelson to within 21-13 at the break.

However, the Blues dominated the proceedings after halftime, using two more touchdown runs from Dawson and a 30-yard rushing score from Lance Fitzgerald to push the margin to 43-13. Wilson's second TD pass, a 14-yarder to Fletcher Bowles, provided the final margin.

PM takes the field again next Friday with a home contest against William Campbell. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
