County Announces Free Tire Disposal

Rockbridge County residents can now dispose of up to eight passenger car or light truck tires per calendar year at no charge at designated staffed collection centers and the Blue Ridge Resource Authority's regional landfill.

The policy is intended for residential purposes only and specifically excludes any commercial use. This new service is the result of the county's desire to make it easier for residents to dispose of tires. In the past, tires could only be disposed at the regional landfill. Residents using this service must verify residence and complete a brief form.

After eight tires have been brought in during a calendar year, a fee of $1.50 per tire will be assessed. Tires may be no more than 32 inches in overall, outside diameter and must be off the rim. Tires larger than this and those on the rim must still be taken directly to the landfill. For more information, call Tracy Shafer, solid waste and recycling manager, at (540) 463-1469.

Tires will be accepted during working hours at the following locations:

Fairfield Collection Center, 6019 N. Lee Highway; and Sallings Mountain Collection Center, 695 Sallings Mountain Road (open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays, 1 to 6 p.m.).

BRRA Landfill, 231 Landfill Road (Mondays through Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).
