Claytor’s Walkoff Hit Lifts Blues To 9-8 Win Over James River

Jonathan Schwab

Wednesday, April 5 – Zach Claytor’s single in the bottom of the eighth inning brought in the winning run to lift the Parry McCluer High School baseball team to a 9-8 victory over James River on Wednesday in Buena Vista.

With no outs, Claytor hit a line drive to center field to bring home Zach Higgins, who had advanced to third base on a JR error.

With the win, the Fighting Blues (3-2) snapped a four-game losing streak against JR, a larger Group 2A school that used to be in the Pioneer District with PM.

The game was close throughout, with the Knights erasing a 5-2 deficit by scoring five runs in the third to take a 7-5 lead. PM scored two runs in the fourth to tie it at 7-7, and each team scored one run in the sixth. After a scoreless seventh inning, the Blues made three quick outs in the field to set up their offense to finish the game.

PM amassed 13 hits in the game, while JR had nine. Claytor and Hayden Bartley led PM with three hits each, and Higgins and Austin Moore each recorded two hits.

On the mound for PM, Claytor pitched the first six innings, striking out six and allowing eight hits, three walks and four earned runs. In two innings of relief, Matt Kiely permitted one hit and no walks.

PM’s defense overcame four errors, while JR committed five.

The Blues will return to action with another nondistrict game at home on Friday against Grace Christian.
