Thursday, May 18 -- The Rockbridge County High School girls soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Wililam Byrd on Senior Night in Lexington.

Maria Vargas scored twice for the Wildcats (8-5-1), who finish the regular season with a winning record for the first time in school history. The victory also added to the program record-setting tally for seniors Emily Tuchler and McKenzie White, who were honored prior to kickoff -- and who helped to anchor a solid defensive effort against a Terrier side that had beaten RC 4-0 three days earlier.

Vargas got RC going with a penalty kick in the fourth minute, converting from the spot after Elsa Joyce was tripped up inside the box. Kelly O'Connor equalized for Byrd in the 26th, capitalizing on a great ball in from Hannah Schram.

The Wildcats would break the stalemate in the 67th minute, as Vargas headed in Hailey Irvine's corner kick for the decisive goal.

Eryn Price and Aly Huntsman each played a half in goal for RC, combining to make seven saves. Grace Carroll notched three stops for the Terriers.

RC will return to action in the Conference 31 quarterfinals at home on Monday. Opponent and match time will be announced later and will be posted here at thenews-gazette.com.
