Saturday, March 9 – The Parry McCluer High School basketball girls team won its third consecutive Class 1 state championship on Saturday, defeating Surry County 58-45 in the finals on Saturday at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center in Richmond.

In a rematch of last year’s state finals, the Fighting Blues (26-4) built up an 11-point lead by halftime and fended off a second-half comeback by the Cougars (26-5).

With the championship, the Blues became just the fifth Virginia High School League girls’ team – and the first from the Timesland – to win at least three consecutive titles.

Madison Dunlap led all players with 25 points, scoring 16 in the first half, and she made two 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. Emma Camden added 17 points and five steals for PM, and Peyton Mohler had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Blues’ pressure defense forced 20 Surry turnovers.

Bre’cha Byrd led the Cougars with 17 points and had nine rebounds, and Alexis Nelson chipped in eight points and a team-high 10 boards.

This was the final state championship run for PM’s nine-member senior class.
