Alleghany Edges RC 1-0 In Girls Soccer Opener

Jeremy S. Franklin

Thursday, March 14 -- Alleghany defeated Rockbridge County High School 1-0 in the girls soccer season opener for both teams in Lexington.

Carlee Lanford scored on a free kick in the 62nd minute and Emma Williams made 13 saves as the Mountaineers claimed the victory. Aly Huntsman totaled six stops in goal for the Wildcats.

RC outshot Alleghany 26-15 and held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. But the Wildcats couldn't get one past Williams, who made several key saves throughout the night -- including a point-blank denial of Hailey Irvine with just over two minutes to play.

Lanford won the game with a brilliant set piece, looping a shot over Huntsman on a free kick from the right side with 18 minutes to play.

RC travels to Northside on Tuesday, and the Wildcats will face Alleghany again on the road on Wednesday. Junior varsity action begins at 5:30 p.m. on both nights.
