AARP Offers Tax Assistance

IRS/AARP-certified tax preparers are again ready to file tax returns for senior citizens and low-to-moderate income clients in the Rockbridge area.

The AARP Tax-Aide program will be offered on Saturdays in the community room at Lexington City Hall.

Walk-ins and those with appointments will be seen from 9 a.m. to 3.p.m. on Saturdays starting Feb. 3 and continuing through April 14.

Walk-ins will be helped from 9 a.m. to noon. Walk-ins and those with appointments will be seen from noon to 3 p.m. To make an appointment, drop by City Hall.

Membership in AARP is not a requirement, nor is there an age minimum or salary minimum.

Taxpayers need to bring a photo ID, the Social Security card for every person claimed on the return, all documents related to income and deductible expenses, and their 1095A (if they purchased health insurance from the Affordable Care Act’s Marketplace.)

In 2017, the Lexington volunteers prepared 250 tax returns for people in the community. “If you would like to become a tax preparer, please stop in and talk to us,” said a spokesperson. “We would love to have more preparers so that we could serve more people in our community.”
